Sprayed 'Limpet' Asbestos - the ideal insulation for railway rolling stock

Advert Titled Sprayed 'Limpet' Asbestos - the ideal insulation for railway rolling stock

This blue asbestos material supplied by J.W. Roberts really was a wonder material when you consider the benefits that it offered. The 1958 advert listed: high thermal efficiency; reduction in sound level; elimination of drumming; prevention of condensation and corrosion; and fire protection. Sadly, the negatives - unknown back then - known greatly outweighed those benefits and the material became a great burden on the railway and in preservation and caused many deaths. Using a steam locomotive in an illustration this late was unusual, especially when the text does not mention steam, just diesel, diesel electric and electric locomotives.

This advert appears in the following categories: Traction: Steam ; Supplier: JW Roberts ; Component: Insulation
