Assuming world-wide importance. This February 1962 Maybach Motorenbau advert notes that the first two of these 74 2,700hp C-C locomotives - which would become know as "Westerns" had been placed in service. Each had two Maybach MD 655 power units, an "intercooled version of the 12-cylinder engines as installed in the well-known D.800 class of locomotives." It was another step in the Western Region's conversion to diesel-hydraulic motive power. The photograph shows the first locomotive D1000 named "Western Enterprise" but without any British Railways branding.
