A 1954 advert from Imperial Chemical Industries Limited (ICI) for their various metal products. The images show a steam train picking up water from a water trough. The text box describes their 'Kynal' products and that year the first DMUs (the Derby Lightweights) were built with this aluminium alloy. Although it was more expensive than steel was seen a cost saving in the long run with lighter vehicles that didn't rust like steel vehicles. But did they really save money when these vehicles were scrapped long before their life-expectancy was up?
