British United Traction (BUT) was a joint venture between Leyland and AEC. As well as supplying the engines and other components from both parties they also developed control systems for railcars and complete vehicles. In the first image on this 1954 advert a GWR railcar is shown, supplied by AEC, and the ACV/BUT railcars. While BUT failed to win big orders in the BR modernisation scheme for complete railcars - only the Park Royal DMUs/railbuses - they would supply the power units and control systems for a high proportion of the vehicles built by other manufacturers. The other two images show railcars for which they had supplied power units - Cravens built vehicles for the Western Australian Government Railways and 3-car sets for the Ulster Transport Authority.
